If you’ve ever wanted to analyze a position from a screenshot, a broadcast, a website, or a photo of a 2D board, but didn’t want to set it up piece by piece, there’s now a tool for that.
CAISSA Scanner (currently in public beta) lets you scan a chess position directly from your phone or computer.
What it does:
- Turns screenshots, photos of 2D boards, website/app diagrams, and broadcast boards into an editable position in seconds.
- Detects the board and the pieces.
- Asks you to review every recognized piece (recommended, since recognition can make mistakes).
- Once confirmed, you can edit the position if needed and analyze it with Stockfish 18.
Key advantages:
- Much less manual setup.
- The position remains fully editable.
- Privacy-focused: scanning doesn’t silently share your image. You control whether you send corrections.
Works best with: Digital 2D boards, screenshots, website or app boards, broadcast boards, and clear photos of screens.
Current beta limitations: Doesn’t handle physical 3D boards well, heavy occlusion, severe perspective angles, or HEIC/HEIF files.
If you frequently analyze positions from photos or screenshots, it’s worth trying:
