The Sun is currently experiencing heightened magnetic activity. The Sun undergoes an approximately 11-year cycle of magnetic activity, known as the solar cycle, during which solar activity increases to a peak (solar maximum) and then decreases to a minimum. We are currently near the solar maximum of Solar Cycle 25, which is expected to continue through 2025.
Recent observations have reported significant solar activity. On January 31, 2025, an M6.8 solar flare was detected, contributing to high solar activity levels.
Additionally, a coronal hole facing Earth on February 1, 2025, is sending a high-speed solar wind stream toward our planet, which could enhance geomagnetic conditions. These heightened solar activities can lead to geomagnetic storms on Earth, potentially causing auroras (northern and southern lights) and affecting satellite communications and power grids. For instance, in late January 2025, intensified auroral displays were observed due to increased solar activity.
Therefore, the Sun's magnetic activity is currently elevated, aligning with its natural 11-year cycle.
