In response to the earthquake, the National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning for the northern California and Oregon coasts. This prompted precautionary evacuations in low-lying coastal areas. The warning was lifted at 11:54 a.m. PST after assessments indicated no significant tsunami threat.

The earthquake caused power outages affecting over 10,000 customers in Humboldt County. Initial damage reports include homes dislodged from their foundations in the Eel River Valley region. Bay Area Rapid Transit temporarily halted services through the Transbay Tube as a safety measure, and the San Francisco Zoo evacuated guests and secured animals.

Governor Gavin Newsom stated that state emergency services are actively responding to the situation. Senate President pro tempore Mike McGuire announced that immediate assistance is being provided to Humboldt and Del Norte Counties to support emergency operations.

This event marks the largest earthquake in California since the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquakes and the most powerful to impact the state's northwestern coast since 2005. Seismologists note that the quake occurred near the Mendocino Triple Junction, a seismically active area where three tectonic plates converge.
