More than just a means of transportation, the capital’s metro is truly a masterpiece of art and architecture. You won’t find two stations that look alike. The Russian city’s metro stations are architectural stunners, perhaps even the most beautiful in the world. The stations are so exquisite, they look like luxurious great halls rather than entrances into an underground transportation network. In fact, due to its sheer magnificence the Metro became known as the 'People's Palaces' or 'Palace of the People' and there was much discourse in Russia at the time about what the Metro was meant to represent. Each station of this underground city has its own palace, its own unique design and style, combining the best architectural paradigms from the past from Greek classicism to Gothic and Art Deco styles.
