Supported Browsers

Description
This article explains which browsers are supported when accessing any Yahoo! property.

Resolution
Yahoo! works best with current versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari (Mac). Please note that we currently do not support "beta" versions of the browsers. Users of non-supported browsers may find that some functions of Yahoo! do not work properly. We highly recommend downloading a supported browser for the full Yahoo! experience.

If you are unsure of which browser version you have, select your browser's Help | About. A window opens showing your browser's name followed by the version number. Yahoo! supports the following browsers:

Windows
:
  • IE 7.0 and newer
  • Firefox version 3.0 and newer
  • Google Chrome version 10.0 and newer
  • Opera 9.5
Mac:
  • Firefox version 3.0 and newer
  • Safari version 3.1 and newer
  • Google Chrome version 10.0 and newer
Note: Although Yahoo! supports all browsers listed above, we always recommend that you upgrade to the latest version for the optimal experience. Two reasons to upgrade:
  • Faster Speed - Newer browsers are faster than ever.
  • Safer Protection - Viruses and spyware don't stand a chance.
You can download the latest versions of each below:
If you already are using the most current version of your browser, then you may need to clear your browser's cache and cookies in order to improve your performance.

Tsarnaev awake and responding in writing

By  | The Lookout – 30 mins ago
Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is awake and "responding sporadically in writing to questions ... about other cell members and other unexploded bombs, " law enforcement sources told ABC News on Sunday evening.
Authorities had been waiting to question the 19-year-old, who is accused of helping to carry out the attack, which killed three people and wounded 180 others, many of them critically, near the finish line of Monday's race.
Earlier Sunday, the FBI said Tsarnaev remains in serious condition at the heavily-guarded Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and a federal official told Yahoo News that Tsarnaev was sedated and unable to speak.

Tsarnaev was brought by ambulance to the facility after he was captured in Watertown, Mass., on Friday, following an intense manhunt that included at least two shootouts with police and ended with the bloodied suspect taken into custody from a tarp-covered boat he had been hiding in. He apparently suffered gunshot wounds to the neck and leg.
Tsarnaev's 26-year-old brother, Tamerlan, the other suspect wanted by the FBI, was killed during a late-night firefight with police in Watertown. Tsarnaev managed to escape on foot, prompting a citywide lockdown as police conducted a house-by-house search for the alleged killer.
The Tsarnaev brothers, who were born in the former Russian territory known as Kyrgyzstan and are of Chechen descent, lived in Cambridge, Mass., for several years. Dzhokhar became a naturalized American citizen last year.
Under U.S. law, authorities have 72 hours after Tsarnaev's arrest to file a criminal complaint against him. When they do, Tsarnaev is expected to face terror charges that could bring the death penalty.
"I hope that the U.S. attorney, Carmen Ortiz, takes him on the federal side and throws the book at him," Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said on ABC's "This Week With George Stephanopoulos" on Sunday.
Richard Roper, a former U.S. District Attorney in the Northern District of Texas, told Yahoo NewsDzhokhar could be charged in his hospital room.
“Then when he’s better, he can make an appearance in court,” Roper said.
Hours after the FBI made a public plea to help identify the suspects from video and photos at the marathon, the brothers allegedly shot and killed an MIT police officer and wounded a transit cop. Authorities said the pair launched explosives during a dramatic high-speed chase in residential Watertown early Friday.
No motive has been revealed for Monday’s attack.
Immediately after Dzhokhar’s capture, federal prosecutors stirred controversy in legal circles by refusing to grant Dzhokhar his Miranda rights against self-incrimination, citing public safety concerns.
"He is not going to be read the Miranda warnings," ABC News Senior Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas said Sunday. "They are going to use the Public Safety Exception, and dive in without advising him of his right to remain silent. They are taking this extraordinary step because there could be an imminent threat still out there. ... There's deep, deep concern about the amount of ammunition, guns and working bombs these men had."
Boston Police commissioner Ed Davis told "Fox News Sunday" that the amount of explosives police found suggested that the brothers may have been planning another attack.
"We are hoping, for a host of reasons, that the suspect survives," Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick said Saturday. "Because we have a million questions, and those questions need to be answered."

Prince Dadian Games

I recently came across some games of Prince Andrei Dadian of Mingrelia that I hadn't seen in any database.  I had published some of them elsewhere, but wanted to put them all into this series.

Because of their innate beauty and creativity, many games by Prince Dadian of Mingrelia are well known.  The following game is bold and clever, but relatively unknown.  I found the game in a an article published in the Krymska Svitlytsya.  Dadian is playing against a Russian master of that time, S. Kostrovitsky of St. Petersburg.

The following 2 games I found in Steinitz' International Chess Magazine, Feb. and April, 1891.  Since he only mentioned that the games were recently played and had been sent to him via Numa Preti of La Strategie, I assigned them the arbitrary, but reasonable year of 1890.

The first game is a Muzio played against an amateur in St. Petersburg, Count P. Kreutz.
[Actually, I found later that this game has already been noted (at chessgames.com) but the opponent's name is erroneously given as Kreutzahler.  The Nuova Rivista degli Scacchi of Feb. 1900  listed the opponent's name as Gen. P. Krentz with the game being played in Odessa 1883.  However, WilhelmThe2nd, who is the closest thing I know to being an expert on Prince Dadian notes :   "Chess is at present in high favour among the aristocratic circles of Russian society in St. Petersburg, and this through the influence of the well-known amateur, Prince Dadian of Mingrelia. Every Tuesday meetings are held at the home of General Count P. Kreutz; on Tuesdays (sic; Thursdays?) at that of Colonel Boutourline, and on Saturdays the elegant salons of Count H. Kreutz, on the banks of the Neva, are at the disposal of the players. Prince Dadian, at the moment, holds the first place in point of strength at these gatherings." ('The Week', July 3rd, 1884, pg. 494)]

The next  game has Dadian playing A. de Smitten, an opponent against whom we already have2 preserved games at chessgames.com, one of which is very similar to this one.
[edit: In the process of researching for this article, I found the first game posted by the aforementioned WilhelmThe2nd but not in any database. He adds:  M.A. de Smitten was one of the strongest amateur players living in Tiflis when Prince Dadian was stationed there while serving in the Tsar's army. According to 'The Chess Monthly' (vol. 13, #154-155, June-July, 1892): "In 1888, at Tiflis, he beat M.A. de Smitten in a set match of seven games up, by 7 to 2 and 3 draws, as well as a large majority of off-hand games." ]

Another game against de Smitten from a different source and an earlier time, Nuova Rivista degli Scacchi , August, 1880:

This de Smitten game came from the BCM in 1890.

The final game here with de Smitten I found reprinted from the NY Tribune in the N. Otago TimesSept. 20, 1892.
